Look at this beautiful manicule-dog that explains the text of Aristotle to a bunny: These pointing hands feature very often arms attached, or consist of fully figures, hybrides creatures or animals. 136rīut non only monsters and exotic creatures… After the 12th century it was usual to put in the margins quite a few maniculae or “little hands”, consisting of a hand (sometimes very elaborate and realistic) with an extended finger to indicate a significant passage of the text. New York, The Morgan Library, MS M.102, fol. Vatican, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Pal. About the mythological people called Monopods (that means «one-foot») or also Sciapods («shadow-foot»), Pliny the Elder says they have a single, enormous foot and are used to lie on their backs during the time of the heat and protect themselves from the sun by the shade of their feet (Nat. In the Ctesias’ History of India, Cynocephali are described as men with dogs’ heads who speak no language, but bark like dogs and live for a very long time, sometimes 200 years. On the existence of Cynocephali in India, the main source for us is the Greek physician Ctesias of Cnidus, but also Marco Polo mentions them when he describes his travel to the island of Angamanain. Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia tells us that the Blemmyae had no head, but had the face on their chest and lived somewhere in Africa. In the Middle Ages many monsters with physical deformities and exotic names (perhaps signifying savagery of non-Christian people) were thought to live on faraway lands, especially the three categories of Blemmyae, Cynocephali and Sciapods. London, British Library, MS Add 42130, fol. London, British Library, MS Add 42130 fol. 79rĪ wife beating her husband kneeling with her distaff: 29r–60v): misogyny or something else? Here are some funny images of this amazing Psalter: It is one of the most intriguing examples of the manuscripts containing illustrations of the English medieval daily life and of a large number of figures of human-animal hybrids: dancers, musicians, wrestlers and a wife beating her husband kneeling with her distaff in a sequence of images of martyrs (fols. The contrast between solemn religious texts and playful and provocative creatures painted in the margins is particularly evident in the well known Luttrell Psalter, commissioned by Sir Geoffrey Luttrell, Lord of the Manor of Irnham in Lincolnshire, and probably written in the first half of the 14th century. It is known that artists and scribes used marginalia for many purposes: they personalized the manuscript for the owner, added levity and irony to the text or represented funny stories in order to make it more interesting yet, but monsters were especially used to express the ugliness of sin and thus they were often portrayed as physically deformed. These amazing and wonderful creatures illustrate not only deluxe bestiaries but surprisingly also many books of prayers, psalters and even the Bible, where the presence of these colourful illustrations appears to be in contrast to the seriousness of the text. Some examples of such early works (chivalric or not) include: The Filocolo by Giovanni Boccaccio from 1335/6 (first novel in Italian) Elegia di Madonna Fiammetta again by Boccaccio from 1343/4 (first psychological novel in the West) Le Mort d'Arthur by Thomas Malory from the 1470's (first novel in English) and other such works.Īlso, other countries developed novels - see for example Lady Murasaki's genius Tale of Genji from Heian Japan (early 11th century).Unicorns, dragons, sirens, griffins, skiapodes, blemmyae, cynocephali and many others fabulous beasts or strange hybrid creatures populate the margins of illuminated medieval manuscripts. Most of the books written in prose were chivalric romances (aka, the kind of books where the brave knight rescues the damsel in distress), which were early signs of what would evolve into the modern form. However, modern novels grew out of medieval traditions, and there are some medieval books we can consider "novels." In the early 13th century, there was a shift from poetry towards prose writing. In fact, the first "modern novel" was Don Quixote published in 1605, two centuries after the Middle Ages! There are some examples of "novels" dating from the Roman era however, these were very different than ones you would find in modern bookstores. That's a really cool question! Unfortunately, it's also kinda hard to answer, because the genre known as a "novel" has greatly evolved throughout time.

Regardless, RiMS is worth checking out if you’re a motorcycle gearhead. Unfortunately, it also seems to be dead online just a month after release. Ultimately, the presentation is barebones and the AI is middling, leading to a game with less longevity than it might otherwise have. Some of this can lead to tedium as you manually change out parts. It feels great to ride your motorcycle, and it’s legitimately cool to see the ways that racing wears on all of the individual parts of your bike. RiMS Racing has a lot of cool ideas in the way that it marries on-track racing to off-track mechanical upgrades. This obviously doesn’t portend well for the life of the game. I tried multiple times to find a race online, but have yet to have any luck. It’s been a month since the release of RiMS Racing. They also like to crash into the back of the player. The other problem I noticed is that the AI seems to be on a rail, following the same lines much of the time. I’d love to see the number rise to 16 or even 20. The fact that you can only race against 9 other bikers tops is supremely disappointing. The only problems with the on-track action relate to the AI racers. The included tracks look great, and the point-to-point racing locations are unique and fun to race through. RiMS Racing is about as hardcore sim racing as you can get on console. That said, my first achievement in the game was for falling off five times. It feels great to nail a corner, and passing fellow riders always provides a rush. The pit stop mechanic is also one of my favorite pit stops in any racing game - you pull into the pits and have to complete a handful of quicktime events in order to change your tires and fill the tank up. It probably took me about 20 laps to really start getting the hang of handling the bike, and that was on lower difficulties. The racing is heavily sim-focused, though the modes for “beginner” racers at least help to keep the bike upright most of the time. Thankfully, the on-track action is pretty good. For the most part, in your career you complete an event and build up cash and XP to upgrade your motorcycle and engineering crew in various ways. But as is the case with much of the game, there’s a lack of pop in the presentation that makes the whole thing seem like you’re just playing through a long list of races, rather than being involved in any sort of narrative. It’s nice to have some choice in how you progress through your career. Sometimes you get to choose between a head-to-head race, a manufacturer’s event to unlock new bikes, or participating in a series of races. You choose from one of eight motorcycles to start with - your usual suspects of Suzuki and Yamasaki, etc. The core mode in RiMS is the single-player career mode. While this process is pretty neat at first - you’re seeing how the bike is constructed down to the literal nuts and bolts - it can turn into a tedious process. Each time you change a part, you complete a series of quicktime events to change out the part. Instead of earning more advanced bikes during the game, your upgrades come in the shape of new individual brake pads, chains, tires and more.Īfter each race in career mode, you can dive into your individual motorcycle parts to check their condition, purchase better parts and change them out. The core concept of the game is that it’s part racing sim, part mechanic sim. RiMS Racing is the newest motorcycle racing sim from French publisher Nacon and first-time developer RaceWard, from Italy. I’ve never played a racing game like RiMS Racing, and its core unique mechanic is both the thing that makes the game stand out, and is also the thing that sometimes make the game tedious to progress through.
Were no navigation aids to help pilots find their way. The Evolution of Airway Lights and Electronic Navigation It was installed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Tower controllers issue landing and taxi clearance to get the aircraft to its parking position at the airport. The perfection of the Very-High-Frequency Omnidirectional Radio Range (VOR) airways made the four-course radio range obsolete. Low level or terminal air traffic controllers issue instructions to the pilot to line the airplane up with the runway so they are in the correct position to land. The air traffic controller ensures the plane has a safe separation distance from other aircraft approaching the airport. When a plane approaches its destination, high or low level controllers instruct the pilot on safe descent routes. As your plane passes from one to the other, or climbs into high level airspace, it is monitored on radar screens and control is passed from one controller to another. That same controller, or a teammate, will then give takeoff clearance when the runway and airspace are clear and it is safe to do so.Īs an aircraft travels over land or sea, and at various altitudes, the airplane may pass through different pieces of airspace. The chart below illustrates who is in control as you make your way from one airport to another.Īt an airport with a control tower, the pilot contacts a tower controller to obtain clearance to move from their gate to their assigned runway, via a specific path. Working in teams, each responsible for different areas of airspace, our air traffic controllers coordinate with various units across the country to ensure each plane is operating safely at each stage of flight. Our air traffic controllers use sophisticated systems and technology, often designed and developed by NAV CANADA employees, to track the location of aircraft and make decisions to ensure efficient flow of traffic. When you fly, our air traffic controllers are with you every step of the way. Air traffic controllers ensure aircraft maintain vertical, lateral or time separation, while following strictly defined rules, procedures and regulations. Our air traffic controllers instruct pilots to climb, turn, descend and move safely, whether they are on the ground at an airport or thousands of feet in the sky. They work with pilots operating all types of planes, from single-engine aircraft to large multi-engine jets. Managing 18 million square kilometres of Canadian and oceanic airspace, our air traffic controllers direct planes, either from the cab of a control tower or on a radar screen in an area control centre (ACC), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I slid them into the fuse, and the fit of the tubes and the wings to the fuse were excellent. Scale exhaust stacks (A6M5) are aluminum, and will need to be shaped a bit to look correct. Clamshell doors are provided, but not installed. Screws that hold the wings in place are 1/4-20. The wheel pants are very solid and well made. The tank is 800cc (about 27 oz.) and seems to be sturdy. It looks decent, but most likely I'll replace the pushrods with 4-40 stuff. Composite control arms are provided that will be glued in using Hysol (once again, just like a jet kit). Stab and elevator showing the nice scale hinge design. The mounts provided are angled aluminum allowing the servo to mount to the wing, not the hatch (much like most jet kits). You catch a glimpse of the servo hatch here. The hinges are nicely done and work very well. Once again you can see some of the nice panel line work. There's some sort of carbon fiber reinforcement from the root to the mount. There are cutouts where the gun breaches would sit, but no guns provided. I'll have to replace it with something more appropriate. The "molded" control stick is much too fat. You can see the channel that the center section of the canopy fits into. That's not a problem, since I've done many myself and know what works for me.Ī better view of the hatch/canopy. A sliding canopy would be easy to do with the parts given, but I didn't see any rails or hardware. I haven't stuck the glass into the canopy yet to see how it fits. Notice the canopy frame and panel lines, both well done. Here's an overall photo showing the cowl and canopy. I dug into the kit a bit further and took some photos. I have been busy with a Hawker Hunter Jet, but now that it's finished I'll start working on the Zero. I'll try to get some photos posted as I get working on it. It's a nice change from the film covered offerings. Initial look at the glue joints appear solid, and everything is made well. The panel lines are nicely done and should weather up well and add to the scale appearance.Įverything considered I'm very happy with it and like the quality. I'll be looking for a bit of adjustment to the scheme. The decals appear to be fairly accurate, and the paint color doesn't seem too far off to me. It's common to see large one piece wings on ARF's anymore, nice to have something that will be easier to haul around. I haven't fitted them yet, but it has sturdy wing tubes provided. No scale radial engine is supplied, I'm thinking the one for the Top-Flite Zero would work fine ($17) It's nice that the Canopy is framed instead of the usual vacuum formed canopy. The cockpit is included, but it will need some work to look scale. It has a large hatch that is nice, but a bit of adjustment may be needed to make sure it fits perfectly. A cheap wheel is provided, but something better will be found. The tail wheel retract is light and should be Ok. I didn't run them up yet to see how well they work. They're electric actuated, and come with a driver board. The mains appear sturdy and come with aluminum wheels (at 4.5" they're a bit small for a 1:4.6 Zero). Should be able to replace the Chinese hinge points with Robarts (didn't measure them yet). Nice heavy box with very good foam inserts. Shouldn't be any issues with getting it shipped to you without any damage. Don't expect really heavy and sturdy glass though, the fuse is thin enough that you need to watch where you squeeze it.
